Our Vision

Here at St John Fisher Early Years, we believe every child is unique and created in the image and likeness of God. We value and see our children at the heart of everything we do. We celebrate the unique qualities and interests of every child and nurture them to reach full potential to take their place in the world.

Our Aims

  • To nurture and respect every child as an individual
  • To value each individual as unique
  • To support children to flourish with their learning and development
  • To ensure children have a strong understanding of who they are as an individual
  • To grow with respect and a wide range of religious values, cultural traditions, and different ways of life
  • To help children to learn of Catholic values and our traditions
  • To work in partnership with parents/carers and other professionals
  • To establish a safe and secure environment, that is both calm and stimulating

Curriculum

At St John Fisher, we work hard to ensure the children make excellent progress through fun and engaging play-based learning. We want the children to have excellent experiences, in which they learn lifelong skills and gain the best, positive start to their education.

The prime areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

There are 4 specific areas which are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

The children are encouraged to use both the inside and outside learning environments, which are set up with continuous and enhanced provision. Continuous provision are the resources which are set up all the time in the environment and our enhanced provision are weekly resources or activities which are set up and link to our topics or termly curriculum overview, based on stories. All provision is carefully planned to ensure children’s skills are individually developed and learning opportunities are personalised to ensure every child makes excellent progress in their learning journey. Our environments are both supportive and challenging for our children.

Alongside this the children are taught through adult-directed lessons or group activities. These include lessons such as RE, PSED, phonics, literacy, maths, PE and more. Through these inputs we teach the children new skills which they can then apply independently through their play.

Tapestry

At our school we use Tapestry which is an online learning journal for each child. You will have your own individual log in, in which you can view weekly pictures or videos of your child’s learning. You can comment on these observations and you can add your child’s home achievements, which we can celebrate at school. If you require any assistance using Tapestry, please speak to a member of staff.

Prayers

The children have been given prayers to practice their Year Group prayers. Please ensure you practice each prayer together. In reception, your child will take home a prayer bag with prayer bear. Please find time to use this for worship at home and send, or stick in photos into the book.

Nursery and reception prayers:

  • Morning Prayer
  • Prayer before meals
  • Prayer after meals
  • Home time Prayer

Read, Write, Inc

At St John Fisher, we use the phonics scheme, “Read, Write, Inc”. More information on this can be found here Parents – Ruth Miskin Literacy

Homework in reception

Reading Book

Reading books are changed once per week. The school expectation is to read with your child at home 5 times per week. The children will need their books and diary in school every day so please ensure they go back into their bags each night. Please sign the diary when you have heard your child read. The books that are sent home match the level that your child is working on in phonics. At first, books without words will be send home. This develops your child’s understanding of stories and enables them to become more confident with blending, before books with words are sent home.

High Frequency Words

Please practice reading these words so they can be read quickly by sight. They are found in the cover of your child’s reading diary and match the level that your child is working at in phonics.

Maths

Each week, maths homework will be set on Tapestry. This usually includes a short mathematical activity to do with your child. Please ensure you upload any photos or videos of this on to Tapestry.

Reception Transition

We recognise that a child starting school can be a daunting experience for both parents and children so we ensure that the transition process is a positive and happy one. This is the first stage of your child’s learning journey so we help this process by:

  • An induction programme which includes an induction evening meeting at the school for parents and carers, and a stay and play session for children to attend with their parents/carers in July
  • Providing information about getting ready for school and life at St. John Fisher in our Reception welcome pack
  • Staff communicating with and, where possible, visiting the pre-school setting your child is already attending
  • If your child is new to our school, a home visit after the Summer holiday, before your child has their first day in school
